#1in3 Africa
Under the cosmetics are unappealing faces, our apparels are our covers to the pains we bear. More often than not we want to sweep our agony under the carpet of hypocrisy until there is a bulge.
Disagreements aren’t absent in marriage and a good home is not one
with two perfect people but for shortcomings, could domestic violence be a way out of getting the best out of each other?
Victims only cry out in voices no
one seems to hear. Those who could read through their minds rather silently
intervene or openly ignore and when victims try to mutter their ordeals, the are publicly tagged, so to them, it all seems no one really cares.
“1in3” and “4in10” African women is abused
daily, the same could also die daily in
the hand of a man!
I read in books and papers, also
heard from people how wives are been abused by their husbands, then I wonder if
that is another way of showing romance in marriage! Little did I know that the very
few who could call for help are negligible fraction of the number of women who are
victims. How I got to know? Research gave the statistics of 1in3 and 4in10 African women abused daily
and my presence at the #1in3Africa campaign gave me the confirmation.
Young and beautiful, Elegant and
confident women have long awaited for a campaign like this as most of them
spoke out on how much they have been beaten and tortured. Most of these women shared
their experiences, including how they have repeatedly visited the hospital as a
result of domestic violence. You can guess right; these women aren’t looking
it!
As said by one of the campaign
team “our culture admonishes us to keep it secret”- Shameful family issues aren’t meant to be publicly discussed. If been beating
by your spouse is demeaning, why wash your dirty rag in the public. Family
members could apologize and sometimes, intimate friends assume to share in the pain
but the victim keeps dying daily. Sometimes, religious people admonish the woman
to keep praying. Prayer? It does work though, if only God spares the life of
the victim so she could share the testimony. Many Innocent women are 6feet
below as a result of domestic violence and many others turned into wolves in human
skin as a result of the psychological torture experienced in the hand of a man.
As championed by Olori Wuraola Zaynab Ogunwusi, #1in3Africa Campaign is to be followed by corresponding actions to put an end
to violence against women in Africa. “It is not easy to be healed after exposure to
domestic violence, it is better prevented and the 2 words be patient usually said
to a victimized woman is killing. A man who abuses his wife would soon have her
daughter abused and the children would have their spouses abused”, said Her Majesty.
Where and when is our
escape?
It is here and now!
“Domestic Violence can’t solve
the problem of bad character; it is rather a compounding factor”!
